The Chariton Valley Biomass Project is currently in a testing and demonstration phase. This activity is being cost-shared by Alliant Energy, Prairie Lands Biomass LLC, Chariton Valley RC&D Inc., the U.S. Department of Energy, and several other project partners. When the project begins commercial operation, switchgrass will have to compete against other sources of electricity, primarily coal. Without incentives for buying switchgrass, purchasing coal will be significantly less costly to the power plant than switchgrass.
One way renewable energy projects like the Chariton Valley Biomass Project can offset the extra cost of producing electricity from renewable resources is to sell their electricity to customers who are willing to pay a small premium to ensure that their electricity comes from renewable resources. In recent years, a market for electricity generated using clean energy resources, also known as “green power,” has begun to develop and grow.
If you are interested in purchasing all or part of your electricity from the Chariton Valley Biomass Project, please provide your contact information and details of your interest in the form below. You would be purchasing electricity generated using a locally-grown, renewable energy resource (switchgrass) and contributing to the wide range of local environmental benefits offered by replacing coal with switchgrass. We need your help to turn our research and demonstration project into a commercially operating success that will provide environmental benefits to southern Iowa for years to come.....
